The latest TikTok trend has got us doing a double take. We really thought we seen it all, first from beauty sponges to silicone pads, but it seems we’ve long evolved from the days of using ’em fingers or the free brushes to do our base makeup. Now we’ve gone a step further. In some rather bizarre news, it seems TikToker @avonnasunshine has found a way to combine skincare and beauty — by using a jade roller to apply her foundation.

For those unfamiliar with the intended purpose of the tool, jade rollers gained popularity in 2018 on social media. Admittedly, it had a long history since it was used among Chinese elites way back in the Qing Dynasty. They’re touted for their ability to boost blood circulation and reduce under-eye swelling. Users massaging the face with a chilled jade roller are said to experience a reduced amount of puffiness alongside an increased efficacy rate of skincare products as it allows them to absorb better into your skin.

So, why should you be using it to apply your foundation? @avonnasunshine explains that since it is made of jade, it won’t absorb any product unlike foundation brushes and beauty sponges. This means you use less product, while still acquiring full coverage. It also has the added benefit of serving up a facial massage as you blend your foundation onto your mien. She also adds that the coolness of the jade roller helps to shrink your pores, so that the foundation goes on smooth, and is more evenly distributed all over your face.

@rachelrigler yes i WILL be doing this every day… tysm @Avonna Sunshine 🥵 #jaderoller #jaderollerfoundation #makeuphack #beauty #foundationhack ♬ original sound – Rachel Rigler

Understandably, this trend definitely sounds promising, and TikTokers like @rachelrigler were quick to swear by the trend. But others were quick to point out that the application took really long, and that in using a beauty sponge or foundation brush, the job gets done much quicker. The facial roller was also hard to use in areas like the nose and around the eyes, so coverage tend to look rather patchy in those areas. This means you’ll have to go over it again with your typical applicator.

But at the end of the day, this definitely is still a fun hack to try that sorta works. So if you have time to spare, why not?
