#FirstClassFriday: The RJ-Romain Jerome Engraved collection
Arguably one of the most far-out maisons in the game, RJ-Romain Jerome hasn't slowed down any in its creativity as they aim for new artistic heights that see the celebrated Skylab 48 and Steampunk watches retrofitted with intricate engravings. Traced all around a bezel of red gold, the collection goes beyond visual effects as it retells the Swiss maison's universes of Air and Sea, depicting the origins of the Skylab and the Steampunk using various complex techniques with each piece entirely handworked from start to finish.
Limited to only nine watches for each model, the baroque beauty of the Engraved collection certainly makes for one heck of a conversation piece — a picture is worth a thousand words, after all. Now take a gander at the stunning scenography of the RJ-Romain Jerome worlds:
SKYLAB 48 RED ENGRAVED
Transporting one and all to the infinity of space, it's a plethora of planets and constellations illustrated upon the 48mm-sized frame. Standing out in stark contrast to the black chrome skeleton movement — powered by the manual-winding RJ004-M calibre — the extraordinary starscape is so finely worked down to the minutest of details, you could practically count the number of rings around Saturn. Highlighted with polished and satin-brushed finishes, even the hands are crafted from red gold to complement the galactic wonder of its bezel.
STEAMPUNK AUTO BLACK ENGRAVED
An ode to steampunk culture, what with a dial bearing four pistons (fully functional, by the way) and a propeller-shaped small seconds counter, this is a watch given to the fancies of the industrial revolution. Ornamented with a bevy of steam-driven contraptions, a keen eye will spy a zeppelin suspended above the noon marker, a steamboat at 3 o'clock, two trains chugging along beneath 6 o'clock and a submarine located at 9 o'clock. Poetic in its execution with billowing clouds of steam acting as a link between each machine, the mechanical self-winding timepiece comes together with a 'rough' finish that plays right into the gritty nature of steampunk.
The Engraved collection is available at authorised retailer The Hour Glass, limited to nine pieces each.
