Pantone colour of the year, living coral, has long been used in jewellery
Under the sea
Pantone has announced the colour of 2019, and it's a shade that straddles that precarious line between red and orange. No less subtle but perhaps a tinge sweeter, coral is back, baby. Precious coral is derived from the skeleton of coral polyps, and gained popularity as a gemstone in yesteryears for the perceived belief that it could ward off evil. Its use as a gemstone in recent times has dwindled, in particular because of issues raised about coral reefs being endangered.
Hence, most of the coral used in high jewellery today is re-purposed from vintage jewels, so let's put back the pitchforks, guys. Given its unique colour and opacity, coral is often depicted as a quirky design motif - like the body of a flamingo or the wings of a bird.
