And their latest collection, Merge, is everything artisanal, architectural, and amazing

"I love pearls," said no millennial ever. Whether by circumstance or design, pearls have been saddled with the fuddy-duddy card that has most folks perceiving them as outdated and old-fashioned. It doesn't help that the heyday of pearl jewellery was in the late 1800's and early to mid 20th century, which only reinforces their image of antiquity.

But fast-forwarding pearls to the 21st century is M/G Tasaki, a younger off-shoot of Japan's premier jeweller whose specialisation in said precious material brought London-based designer Melanie Georgacopoulos and her cool girl aesthetic into the fold as head honcho. Turning pearls into modern statement pieces since 2012, the brand's new Merge collection features innovative designs that combine gold and pearls together as if they were a single material.

With the collection's moniker setting the direction, four sub-designs themed to the concept of 'joining together' highlight the pearl in unexpected ways. You've got Grain, Floret, Woven, and Arlequin, each one deftly combining pearls with diamonds and yellow gold in unique and creative arrangements: Grain spotlights the beauty of asymmetry; Floret is delicate and sweet; Woven exudes a cool elegance; Arlequin works a fascinating glamour. Every shape is surprisingly simple at its core, yet draws out the beauty of the materials with maximum visual impact. From three-finger rings to a cascading, chain-like pearl necklace, you haven't seen pearls this diverse or expressive.

Actually, make that covetable too while we're at it.

The Merge collection is available at the Tasaki boutique at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, Level 1-43/44.
