Choo Yilin weaves in Nyonya embroidery into her Peranakan Lace collection

Traditional finesse

The local jewellery designer pays tribute to the traditional kebaya in her latest collection

A Nyonya kebaya isn't simply the traditional attire of the Peranakan community. It's a garment that tells a story, one that's intricately woven using hand-sewn embroidery. Like all her creations, Choo Yilin's latest addition to her jade line continues to pay tribute to the Peranakan aesthetic — this time, focusing on the lace of kebayas.

The intricate nyonya embroidery is reimagined into filigree metalwork embellished with amethyst, rhodolite garnet, London blue or sky blue topaz — artfully translated onto her signature Type A jadeite. The Peranakan Lace collection also welcomes two new silhouettes: Jade drop earrings and jade rings featuring metalwork centrepieces.
