Ralph Lauren takes the wheel with new additions to the RL Automotive Tourbillon collection
Driving Mr. Lauren
Supercars may be the vehicular standard when it comes to wowing the crowds, but there's something about a vintage ride that draws the attention even more so — specifically the 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, a classic that is Mr. Ralph Lauren's very own. Inspired by this legendary car, the RL Automotive collection pays homage to all the nuances of this coupe, connecting automobile to horology in a culmination of precision, high-performance and style.
Launching two new timepieces to the lineup, the RL Automotive Tourbillon and the RL Automotive Double Tourbillon, both additions are sized at the collection's signature 45mm frame within which sits a cutting-edge Swiss-made complication. A movement that counteracts gravitational effects with an escapement housed in a rotating cage for improved accuracy — on top of being embellished with vertical Côtes de Genève stripes and a perlage decoration — an even more complex binary tourbillon outfits the striking double tourbillon edition. Flaunted within a galvanic, matte black dial highlighted with beige SuperLuminova hour and minute hands, the refined façade of the new Automotive additions are further elevated with shot-blasted cases made of stainless steel with a black finish that appoint the timepieces with a luxurious heft.
Furthermore, the bezels are cut from amboyna burl hardwood, a material used in the interiors of luxury rides — which had to be carefully hand-finished to reveal the lustre of the rich, swirling grain — to reflect the collection's motorcar origins. Secured by handset screws and edged with sleek, tapered lugs, both RL Automotive Tourbillon renditions continue to drive power and elegance as fine watchmaking symbols of form and function.
The RL Automotive Tourbillon and RL Automotive Double Tourbillon are available at Ralph Lauren boutiques and authorised retailers.
