Breitling revealed its cool new identity and these celebrities are loving it
Watch enthusiasts and celebrity-spotters from all over Asia were treated to a star-studded gala evening last night in Shanghai as the Breitling watch company unveiled its new Navitimer 8 collection.
Breitling's new global CEO Georges Kern welcomed a host of celebrities, artistes, athletes, and fashion influencers all dressed in black or dark blue to join him and 300 guests from the region in writing a new chapter for the Swiss luxury watch brand. The Navitimer 8 is the first novelty that Kern has launched since acquiring the brand in 2017.
Its name, Navitimer 8, refers to the company's historical Huit Aviation Department founded in 1938.
Chinese actor and director Stephen Fung appeared in a cool navy blue suit with rose gold buttons that pair perfectly with his red gold Breitling Navitimer chronograph.
Korean actor Ji Sung was dressed in classic black-tie. Sharing that his very first memorable watch was a Breitling gifted to him by wife, Lee Bo-Young, Sung was seen with a red gold Navitimer chronograph with the classic reverse panda dial on black alligator leather.
Chinese actor Yang Shuo looked especially glamorous in a dark blue velvet dinner jacket which he'd chosen to pair with a classic Navitimer chronograph on a brown calfskin leather strap.
Singapore's Nathan Hartono also joined the megawatt line-up. His look blended classic with contemporary – a navy suit with a light grey sweater-shirt – and on the singer's wrist is the Navitimer chronograph on black calfskin.
Clearly, the Navitimer chronograph is not only Breitling's strongest icon but a definite crowd favourite too, but the newer, younger Navitimer 8 is about to give it some competition. Positioned as a prequel to the icon, it is inspired by dashboard instruments and historical Breitling watches between the 1940s and 50s.
In addition to the celebrities, an extraordinary showcase of 60 vintage Breitling timepieces brought the evening to the next level. The pieces were contributed by a major collector and connoisseur of Breitling chronographs, Fred Mandelbaum who hails from Austria.
Says Georges Kern, "I am very proud that tonight we will unveil the new Navitimer 8 collection," he said, "which is a salute to the brand's innovations and accomplishments in the pioneering days of aviation."
From Shanghai, Breitling will take its international tour next to Zurich and then to New York City.
More may be expected from Breitling at the upcoming BaselWorld 2018.
