Watch: Nico Rosberg for IWC Schaffhausen, the Buro x Bernard Pivot exclusive interview

Text: Angelyn Kwek

We sit down with Nico Rosberg to talk about his collab effort with IWC Schaffhausen, on top of quizzing the F1 world champ in our Bernard Pivot Q&A. Bonus: A round of Buro’s Double Tap game

How does one honour an F1 world champion? For starters, you could dedicate a watch to him in his name. The next step would be giving him free reign to design said watch however he fancies. And that's exactly the scenario that set the design aesthetics for the IWC Schaffhausen Ingenieur Chronograph "Tribute to Nico Rosberg" edition. Honouring the 2016 F1 titleholder — he finally clinched it in Singapore at our night race on the tenth go round, FYI — this hallmark timepiece of IWC sees Rosberg taking his brand ambassadorial duties to the next level beyond simply putting his name on a watch.

With teamwork alongside the maison's creative director, Christian Knoop, the design input straight from the F1 veteran has this special edition Ingenieur sporting a unique dial that eschews the traditional hour indices for a 60-minute track — a direct reference to the stopwatches used in realm of racing. Sharing the 42mm diametre watch face are three sub-dials that feature the hours, minutes and seconds of the stopwatch function, running on the in-house manufactured 69375 calibre that boasts a 46-hour power reserve. To glimpse this movement, a quick flip over shows a transparent caseback that bares the mechanism whirling within, although one's gaze will most likely fixate on the 'NICO' lettering right in the centre — and it's the exact same print right off of Rosberg's helmet.

In a candid sharing session of his design process, the world champ divulged that reams of paper were sacrificed on the road to his own IWC Ingenieur before he finally nailed down the elegant shade of gray for the leather straps. A colour that's a first for Ingenieur family, by the way. Complemented by a red gold case that offsets the slate-coloured dial, this sleek sports watch was certainly Rosberg's speed, and is available in only 23 pieces to commemorate his 23 F1 wins.

So what happens when we commandeer this unique timepiece and time Rosberg with his own watch in a quick-fire round of Buro x Bernard Pivot questions? Even better, what happens when we had the F1 world champ play Double Tap, our very own card game? Click that play button in the video above to find out, curious cats.

The Ingenieur Chronograph "Tribute to Nico Rosberg" is available in IWC Schaffhausen boutiques and from authorised IWC retailers.
