Bvlgari’s new high jewellery collection is all about the extravagant ‘80s

Bvlgari takes us back to the loud and electric era of the ‘80s with the Wild Pop collection

Think dramatic colour combinations and grand dimensions, plus an aesthetic that challenges every high jewellery convention and you've got the Bvlgari Wild Pop collection. Inspired by the go-go '80s attitude — which is totally in line with the rule-breaker maison — these new haute joaillerie creations are fully embracing the unexpected by working the 'more is more' mantra.

Centred on the creative milieu dominated by larger-than-life personalities who were changing the pop culture scene then, such as Prince, Madonna, David Bowie and Grace Jones, it was actually King of Pop Art Andy Warhol that provided the impetus for Wild Pop. Riffing off his artistic direction thanks to a visit to the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in NYC, Bvlgari's creative director Lucia Silvestri was bit by the inspirational bug when she saw Bvlgari catalogs and correspondence in the artist's archives (Nicola Bulgari and Warhol were pals). She explains: "I wanted to do something about this fantastic dialogue between Bvlgari and Andy Warhol."

And in a full circle moment, seeing Warhol's keepsakes reminded Silvestri of the lessons learnt working with Nicola himself, which were the words "you have to dare". With the Wild Pop collection, jewellery takes on its most audacious and irreverent persona yet, capturing the disruptive daring of today in a collision of innovation, fashion, art, tech, and culture — touched with liberal splashes of '80s, of course. See the collection in all its extravagant glory in the gallery above.
