How he got started: It was during the Asian Financial Crisis that Peng, who was trained as a lawyer, came across a run-down building on Keong Saik Road (then a former red-light district). He fell in love with the building and bought it at a steal. He revamped it and it became one of the first boutique, designer hotels in Singapore — Hotel 1929. From here, he also began his foray into F&B by partnering with Chef Sebastian Ng to open Restaurant Ember.
Notable achievements: Few people can imagine the possibilities of a dilapidated building forgotten by time. But for hotelier-restaurateur Loh Lik Peng of the Unlisted Collection group, an old warehouse or dilapidated shophouse forms the perfect backdrop for his next boutique hotel. With seven properties spanning four countries, the group's latest venture — The Old Clare Hotel — sees its portfolio expanding down under to Sydney, Australia. In 2011, Loh was awarded the "Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year" award at the Singapore Experience Awards 2011, the most prestigious awards platform in Singapore's tourism industry. Loh also has over 20 restaurants and bars under his belt, including the award-winning Burnt Ends and Esquina in Singapore.
Something you might not have known about him: He doesn't actually cook. Loh says, "Many people are surprised to hear that I don't cook. It shouldn't be surprising because I dine out all the time — it's what I really enjoy."
