Name: Astrie Sunindar-Ratner
Date of birth: 27 June 1980
Occupation: Founder of The Beauty Candy Apothecary and mum to three beautiful kids
Industry: Beauty, Lifestyle
How she got started: Sunindar-Ratner loved finding niche beauty and lifestyle products during her travels and realised that Singapore was sorely missing a concept store that curated beautiful products, coupled with good service. She opened her dream store, The Beauty Candy Apothecary, in 2013, and has since moved from cosy digs at Cluny Court to its current location at Mandarin Gallery. Sunindar-Ratner curates her brands mostly through her travels, but also reads a lot of fashion and beauty magazines as well as blogs to suss out new brands. If she see something that catches her eye, she usually does a bit of research about the history of the brand, tries the products and examines the packaging before deciding whether to bring these brands into Singapore.
Notable achievements: The opening of The Beauty Candy Apothecary, which is now seen as a beauty landmark and pioneer in Singapore for introducing a hand-picked selection of hard-to-find and cult products into Singapore and Southeast Asia. Despite being a relatively young company, the store has become the go-to source for information and inspiration on all things beauty — stocking brands as diverse as Tata Harper skincare, beauty drink Cilk and Maison Zhou sleepwear. When Net-A-Porter's beauty buyers came in to town last year, her store was one they were keen to check out.
Something you might not have known about her: She graduated from the Parsons School of Design and worked in fashion PR in New York. Sunindar-Ratner even had her own fashion line for five years after she graduated.
A quote to sum it all up: "My mission was, and still is, to spot the most exciting trends as they happen around the world and bring them to the market's attention via our different channels."
