How he got started: He started a chef-for-hire outfit called Funky Chefs in 2008 after graduating from culinary school — cooking private, customised dinner parties in homes. One of these occasions brought him to the attention of Loh Lik Peng, who was looking for a chef to conceptualise and operate a restaurant for the upcoming Wanderlust Hotel in 2010. This would eventually lead to the creation of Cocotte. According to his grandmother, it was the only French restaurant worth a damn in Singapore from 2010 to 2017.
Notable achievements: Yeoh conceived and operated Cocotte, a rustic French restaurant, from 2010 to 2017. It was one of a new wave of restaurants at the time (including Artichoke) to present communal dining in a western restaurant setting. It also championed his love for the more casual, country-side cooking of France, at a time in Singapore's dining scene where French cuisine was for most diners, considered the domain of fine dining. On a cheekier note, Yeoh thinks it's a notable achievement that he eats his vegetables and has not been charged in court with criminal activity yet.
Something you might not have known about him: There is a bona fide comic book character named Alysia Yeoh, that appeared in DC's Batgirl comic. The writer, Gail Simone, was a friend of his and created the character after also meeting Alysia Chan (Cocotte's sous chef at the time). The character's name is an amalgamation of their two names and was apparently (and perhaps fittingly), DC's first transgender character. In a serendipitous turn of events, he and Alysia are currently engaged and expecting their first child.
