Marc Jacobs' The Color Collection puts on a strong case for living life in colour.

Leave it to Marc Jacobs to remind us that life is what we make of it. The American designer is not one to shy away from being himself and expressing his eclectic sense of style — all it takes is a peek into Jacobs’s Instagram feed to know what we mean — at any time of the day. There’s no doubt that that sense of freedom of expression informed the brand’s latest The Color Collection.

Launched in pre-autumn 2021 (and set to be an ongoing series with more future additions), The Color Collection takes design cues from the brand’s iconic tote bag. Its sturdy canvas construction is emblazoned with ‘The Tote Bag’ right smack in the middle before ending the typography-driven design with the brand’s name right beneath the so-obvious-you-can’t-miss-it text.

Therein lies the clever genius of The Color Collection. Like the Marc Jacobs tote bag and in effect, the collection’s name, there’s no pretence in what it actually is and how they fit into one’s wardrobe. The Color Collection is a collection of elevated basic essentials ranging from a T-shirt (in both fitted and oversized proportions) to a tennis dress, with a number of lounge-appropriate bottoms peppered in between. Each silhouette comes branded with ‘Marc Jacobs’ and is available in seven colours — not quite the exact colours of the rainbow but a tightly curated edit made for both monochromatic and multi-coloured styling.

For anyone averse to bold and bright colours, The Color Collection starts with essential blacks and chalk whites before gradually building up with subtle neutrals in the form of slate green and a cloudy blue tone that it calls ‘blue shadow’. The collection’s boldest hues are referred to as ‘aloe’, ‘cyclamen’ and ‘pomelo yellow’ but even then, don’t cross into neon-bright territory.

The same offering of colours are available in the collection’s accessories too. The Colors Tote — available in three different sizes — stays true to the original but now done in a range of colours. That same all-over colour is applied to The Colors Camera Bag as well for a sleeker crossbody option.
