#TravelTuesday: Shanghai through the eyes of Wing Shya
The artist's notebook
Hong Kong filmmaker and fashion photographer Wing Shya needs no introduction. His eye for visual poetry has seen fellow filmmaker Wong Kar Wai enlisting him as a photographer on the set of Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, Eros, and 2046. Through his lens, bold, saturated colours punctuate otherwise bleak landscapes, and listless beauties find themselves trapped in urban ennui, yearning, and the dust of everyday life.
Wing Shya brings his distinct aesthetic to Fashion Eye, a collection of travel photography books from Louis Vuitton that frames each city through the eyes of a fashion photographer. While Wing Shya turns his lens on Shanghai, where he lives part time, the collection features four other titles to ignite your wanderlust: Miami by Guy Bourdin, Paris by Jeanloup Sieff, California by Kourtney Roy, and India by Henry Clarke. Each colourful tome features over a hundred large-format photographs, each evocative of the city and its inhabitants.
Wing Shya's lyrical ode to Shanghai sees a mix of photographs from his personal archives sitting alongside commissioned works, all of which cast Shanghai in an entirely new light.
Louis Vuitton's "Fashion Eye" Collection is available from November 2016 at all Louis Vuitton boutiques.
