Onitsuka Tiger releases the world's first augmented reality sneakers
Welcome to the year 2017, where sneakers aren't just made for walking or running — now, they also sport a major technology purpose. Sneaker giant Onitsuka Tiger has teamed up with Japanese fashion label ANREALAGE to create MONTE Z, a pair of limited-edition sneakers that encompasses both minimalism and futurism all at the same time.
How does it work? First, download ANREALAGE's mobile app and scan the shoes by taking a photo. The ANREALAGE logo will then pop up in a three-dimensional form from your phone, while music from Japanese rock band Sakanaction starts booming in the background. Talk about a visual auditory experience.
Decked in a contrasting black and white colour scheme, the high-street sneakers are fronted by the distinctive logo of ANREALAGE (the brand is famously known for their avant-garde style of detailed patchwork). Taking inspiration from the Japanese kimono, the shoes also heed a monosock structure, allowing wearers to easily slip their feet in without the hassle of tying laces.
While the augmented reality element might not stand for much in terms of function, the collaborative effort marks a sneaky prelude to what the future might hold for technology and the clothes on our backs. We're definitely excited.
The MONTE Z is now available at all Onituska Tiger stores.
