Pushing the boundaries

Have you ever wanted to experience life inside a time-warped sci-fi film? Modern-day inventions like the hoverboard, 3D printers and air touch technology have transformed this once-futuristic concept into a current reality. And with innovative gadgets lining up, tech-enabled eyewear has graced our world. Yes, that right — Chinese tech giant Huawei and South Korea's cult-favourite eyewear house Gentle Monster, have married their innovative talents to produce a one-of-a-kind pair of smart glasses. Unlike space-age movies, these smart glasses aren't equipped to shoot laser beams or ignite holograms with a single tap to the temples. Its aim is to aid the wearer in navigating everyday life through its multi-purpose features — that alongside sleek design to double up its first and foremost function — as a pair of stylish sunglasses.

Catering to an array of personal preferences, the Huawei X Gentle Monster eyewear launch showcases versatility in its two sunglasses and three myopia glasses set. And depending on what suits your face, choose between the Smart Eastmoon for a more circular frame or the Smart Jackbye for an oversized square frame — giving you that sculpted dimension. Did we mention it's also waterproof and dust-proof?

The experience

A widely known fact about this product is that it is more compatible with Android devices — of course. What this means for Apple users? You won't get to experience the full range of features the eyeglasses have to offer. We paired ours up with an iPhone. With dual-speaker design and semi-open speakers for sound field performance, we were eager to test out its sound range and quality. But naturally, the sceptic in us had questions about sunglasses emitting decent sound quality. The speaker is said to form a directional beam that is transmitted to the wearer's ear, reducing the leakage of sound. In our Spotify app, we tested out the bass and instrumental sound, and came to a final conclusion that the sound wasn't all that sharp. But then again, how crystal clear can speakers on eyeglasses be? Evidently the feeling of Cardi B blasting through our eyewear was a unique experience so the novelty didn't wear off yet. Another thing to note is that there was a leakage of sound so before you go ahead blasting out your favourite tunes in public — remember it's not 100% fool-proof. A feature we appreciated whilst listening to music is that when you remove the glasses, the music automatically pauses and then resumes when you put them back on. And the best part? The sleek portable leather eyewear case acts as a non-contact wireless charging outlet.

Better with an Android

To make a fair judgement, we compared its pairing to an Android. One quick flick showed a few inconsistencies that those on the Android wagon would appreciate, including many perks that the iOS would not warrant. First off, users get to experience more interactive speech features with humanised greetings like "Good morning" or "Good evening". Now if that doesn't seem all too important for you, the single-sided dual microphone with an industry leading 5mm distance from the temples is one feature you can't overlook. With relatively crisp sounds on both ends of the caller and receiver, the ability to pick up phone calls and answer through the sunglasses was seamless and efficient. And on top of that, there was also the voice assistant — activated through a double tap on the sensor.

Our final verdict

We get it, owning a pair of smart glasses sounds incredibly cool. Not only is it an on-trend accessory that is hard to beat but its lightweight appearance and innovative features do have it set apart from the rest of the pack. Regardless, there are some things to be made aware of. The speakers are not sound leakage proof, which means that if the volume is too high, awkward situations will ensue with private phone calls made in public. Also, no matter how strong your sense of hearing is, standing at a loud intersection will render the eyewear useless. But all things considered, the niche market of smart glasses provides a unique selling proposition that the collaboration can relish in. One thing is certain however, Huawei x Gentle Monster has definitely pushed the boundaries on what the future of smart glasses can look like. We can hardly wait to see its ripple effect.
