Apple’s iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max: What to know about the line-up
Four times the fun
After months of speculation and a notable absence from Apple's 2020 Keynote Event, Apple has unveiled their iPhone 12 line-up with a whopping four models: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Worth the wait, right? But with a fleet like this, it can get a little confusing on the details of each. Below, we outline the highlights of the four new iPhone 12 models.
The new iPhone 12 sees Apple entering the 5G era. Besides picking up speed when it comes to downloads and uploads, the 5G-enabled iPhone 12 will also allow for higher quality video streaming, increased responsivity in gaming, real-time interactivity in apps, high-definition FaceTime, and more. iPhone 12 will be powered by the new A14 Bionic chip, the first chip in the industry to be built on 5-nanometerprocess, resulting in the fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50% compared to other competing smartphone chips, with substantial battery life.
The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 features an all-screen Super Retina XDR display that stretch to the edges, with a new flat-edge design combined with an aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure. It also hosts a Ceramic Shield front cover that increases drop performance by 4 times, making it the best possible device for those prone to dropping their phones. iPhone 12 is also updated with an IP68 rating for water resistance up to 6 meters for 30 minutes. Translation: your phone will be well-protected against everyday spills, even against coffee and soda. The new dual-camera system features Night mode on both the ultra-wide camera and the new wide camera, which allows for clearer and even more detailed low-light photos and videos. iPhone 12 will also feature the first camera to shoot HDR video with Dolby Vision, and it's also the first and only device in the world to contain end-to-end Dolby Vision experience. Other video updates include improved cinematic video stabilisation, Night mode Time-Lapse, better light trails, and smoother exposure in low-light scenarios.
iPhone 12 mini
Proclaimed by Apple as 'the smallest, thinnest and lightest 5G smartphone in the world', the iPhone 12 mini is the compact answer to the iPhone 12. The first iPhone to include the 'mini' moniker, it features a reduced 5.4-inch screen with edge-to-edge Super Retina XDR display. Besides the smaller screen size, the 5G-enabled iPhone 12 mini is otherwise similar to its larger counterpart, including features such as the A14 Bionic chip, aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure, and Ceramic Shield front cover. Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini comes in five colours, including an all-new mint green and deep blue. Something tells us the former will be a hot favourite.
iPhone 12 Pro
The 5G-enabled iPhone 12 Pro, touted as the 'best iPhone ever', features the same powerful A14 Bionic chip and Ceramic Shield front cover as the iPhone 12. Instead of aluminium, the flat-edge design for the iPhone 12 Pro sees a surgical-grade stainless steel band paired with a precision-milled matte glass back. The 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro introduces the new Apple ProRAW feature, which allows users to snap away with the versatility of a RAW format. This paths the way for full creative control over colour, detail and dynamic range. The iPhone 12 Pro also hosts three cameras: a new seven-element lens wide camera, the familiar ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 52mm focal length Telephoto camera that allows for 4x optical zoom range. The all-new LiDAR Scanner, used by NASA in preparation for their next Mars landing, is introduced to the Pro line. The advanced technology allows for the ability to measure light distance and pixel depth information of a scene, leading to more immersive and realistic AR experiences. Autofocus is improved by six times in low-light scenes, photo and video capture time is reduced, and Night mode portraits is also available on the iPhone 12 Pro, which means you can definitely up your selfie game even if the light isn't in your favour.
iPhone 12 Pro Max
Joining the iPhone 12 Pro line-up is the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The 6.7-inch iPhone offers the largest display ever on an iPhone, with the highest resolution ever at nearly 3.5 million pixels. Aside from the similar features seen on the other iPhone 12 models, the Pro Max boasts an impressive pro camera experience. Like the iPhone 12 Pro, the Pro Max has three cameras: the expansive ultra-wide camera, a new ƒ/1.6 aperture Wide camera with 47% larger sensor and 87% improvement in low-light conditions, and a even-longer 65mm focal length Telephoto camera for increased flexibility with closer shots and tighter crops. The system altogether offers 5x optical zoom range. Both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max comes in four stainless steel finishes, with a new pacific blue shade making its debut. Apple also introduces the new MagSafe system for all four iPhone 12 models, which enables seamless wireless charging and easily attachable magnetic accessories.
Which one's for you? Well, we say the differentiation honestly boils down to your preference for finish, size, and the extent of making headway with the capabilities of the iPhone 12(s). Given the pre-order date, you've still got time for contemplation.
