AirPods Pro: Apple’s latest earphones offer a better fit, immersive sound, and active noise cancellation
AirPods have been one of Apple's most successful products ever. In fact, within three months of going on sale they became the number one wireless headphones worldwide and are currently the best-selling headphones in the world. Now, in a bid to expand their existing AirPods line, Apple has announced the launch of the all-new AirPods Pro, which are designed to fit your ears better and equipped with Active Noise Cancellation. This means it cancels out external ambient sound — goodbye, enthusiastic voices of teenagers on the train.
Below, all the nifty features that make the AirPods Pro worth its hefty price tag. Is it worth shelling out the extra cash? We certainly think so.
One of the biggest complaints about the original AirPods is the fact that they don't fit in all ears securely. But, the new AirPods Pro feature a noise isolating design and come with three different sizes of flexible silicone tips. They feature an internal taper that conforms to the shape of your ear, securing your AirPods Pro in place and creating an exceptional seal that reduces background noise. Along with the medium-sized tips that come pre-installed on the headphones, there are also small and large versions in the box to ensure a perfect fit. What's more, they have developed an Ear Tip Fit Test to test the quality of the seal and identify the best ear tip size for your ears. As an added bonus, the AirPods Pro are sweat and water resistant, making them perfect for long walks in our hot (and sometimes rainy) climate.
Active noise cancellation
AirPods Pro are Apple's first true wireless headphones to feature active noise cancellation. They reduce noise around you by utilising two microphones combined with advanced software to continuously adapt to each individual ear and headphone fit. The first of the two microphones faces outwards, detecting and analysing environmental noise. The AirPods Pro then return an equivalent anti-noise that cancels out background sounds, increasing clarity for the listener. The second microphone faces toward the ear and cancels out any remaining distortion detected by the microphone.
Like many noise-cancelling headphones, the AirPods Pro have a transparency mode for when you need to hear what's going on around you. Switching between Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency Modes is simple and can be done directly on the AirPods Pro using a new, innovative force sensor on the stem. This is especially useful when listening in on interesting conversations as you go about your day.
The AirPods Pro feature the same battery life as the original AirPods, with up to five hours of listening time. In Active Noise Cancellation mode, they can deliver up to four and a half hours of listening time, and up to three and a half hours of talk time, on a single charge. The case can be charged either wirelessly using a Qi-certified charger or with the Lightning connector.
The AirPods Pro are priced at $379 and is available at all Apple Stores and online.
