Singapore's new drive-in cinema is at Downtown East — here's what to expect
Catch it in your car
*The drive-in cinema will not take place as intended due to unforseen circumstances.
Cinemas have recently resumed their activities, and though we miss the plush velvet seats, buttery popcorn, and the glorious surround sound, we think an alternative old-school experience wouldn't hurt. Remember that iconic scene from Grease? Well, for the first time in a long time, a drive-in cinema experience is returning to our shores— an apt call for the current times.
After all, few things are more romantic than watching your favourite film with your special someone under a sky full of stars. It's sure to amplify the experience of merely watching movies at home on your laptop or TV screen. Here's what to know about our city's drive-in cinema this August.
It's at Downtown East
This drive-in cinema will be located in Downtown East, a spot popular amongst families with kids. It will be situated atop the Begonia open-air carpark, and will be able to accommodate up to forty cars in one screening. A journey worth making down the far East.
There's good package deals for tickets
Entry to the cinema for each car is $18, which includes free parking, two burgers, and two soft drinks. As part of the package deal, Ramly burger joint, Ministry of Burgers has also committed to serving up its signature burgers at $4.50 each, along with their soft drinks at only $1.50. A complete steal, if we're comparing with typical cinema food prices. Your go-to cinema snacks like popcorn, nachos and other smaller snacks are also available. Cars are allowed in on a first-come-first serve basis, starting from 6pm onwards. There will also be temperature-taking and a requirement to check-in via SafeEntry. Cars will have to maintain safe distancing by parking in alternative lots. You know the drill.
It's going to be retro, alright
Drive-in cinemas used to be way more popular back in the 1960s and 70s with cinemas opening in Jurong, and they're making a well-deserved comeback in these unprecedented times to charm us with their retro, old-school vibes. To really stay true to the experience, the servers come straight to your car with your food on their rollerskates. You won't even have to get out of your car to get your food — safe and super groovy.
The first movie will be "The Greatest Showman"
The first movie that this retro drive-in cinema will be screening is none other than the award-winning The Greatest Showman, which will have the cast (featuring Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Hugh Jackman) breaking into song and dance on the massive 12-metre-by-8-metre projector screens. We're looking forward to the other movies that they'll be showing on September 12, October 24, and November 21. Fingers crossed for a thrilling slasher hit from the '90s?
