Audi unveils the new A5 Coupé
Where sport meets elegance
Working out all the design and tech functions in the handsome A5 Coupé can be a tad baffling at first, especially if it's your first time driving an Audi. It's like driving into the future. You have a personal assistant, much like iPhone's Siri, where a voice control system complies with all your requests, like "I want to call Hayley," to "Please drive me home." The virtual cockpit, a 12.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1,440 x 540 pixels, is the command centre that lets you select your radio station, vehicle drive mode and showcases maps on your drive home. Best of all, you have your own seatbelt feeder, which electrically extends and retracts the minute you're seated with the doors closed. No more fumbling with a seatbelt that tends to be too far back for your liking, especially in a coupé.
Once your head is around it all, this sleek car becomes a breeze. Your seatbelt is on within seconds, you've told your personal assistant where you're headed, the maps are well-loaded, and you're off. The newly developed chassis offers a high level of agility. You've got the vehicle on dynamic mode because you love feeling in control of it all, but an option to switch to comfort mode (where the steering wheel is lighter) on days when you're driving long distances. Alternatively, set your own customised mode so your car manoeuvres exactly how you want it.
Combining emotional design with sporty handling characteristics and progressive technology is a massive selling point of the A5 Coupé. It is significantly more efficient than its predecessor — thanks to the clever mix of materials and lightweight design, making it 60kg lighter. The car's exterior features a three-dimensional shoulder line in the form of a wave, and a precise line with pronounced bulges over the wheel arches emphasises all four wheels.
"The new Audi A5 Coupé is the Gran Turismo from Audi — a perfect fusion of dynamic sports car and elegant coupe. The very first A5 was a design masterpiece. The designers have now taken perfection to a new level," says Jeff Mannering, managing director of Audi Singapore.
Fire up the engines of the A5 Coupé, which starts off with a new 2.0 TFSI with 190hp. With a moderate driving style, you'll experience the economic advantages of a smaller engine, but do not feel its disadvantages for sportier drives. The ride is extra smooth and cocktail-hour comfortable — clipping corners seamlessly, soaking up bumps while cruising and is quiet and cool for the most part. In addition, expect neat details such as dynamic LED indicator lights, mirrors on stalks, and frameless side windows, which will have fellow drivers on the road surreptitiously glancing over. Heading on an extended holiday? You're all set with Audi's increased luggage space (at 465 litres) and its ample leg room for both the driver and passenger. We'd love to take this baby on a spin down the French Riviera this summer.
