A recount of Iron Man's Audi R8s through the years, and what he should be driving next
To chart the fortunes of Iron Man's Audi R8 is to chart the fortunes of Marvel Cinematic Universe itself. Everyone loves Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man for different reasons. Boys love him because who doesn't want to have money, smarts and roguish charm. Girls love him because, well, who doesn't love roguish charm and someone with money and smarts.
And they also love the car he's driven since day one, an Audi R8. The R8 proved to non-automotive nerds that Audi that could finally be mentioned in the same breath as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche.
So, just why are we suddenly bringing up the Audi R8?
Everyone already knows how Infinity War ended, and there were more spaceships than cars in that movie. Well, we hate to brag, but we've got a very red R8 (Audi says it's Dynamite Red, but we swear it looks orange-y) sitting in the parking lot right now, so we thought we'd take a look back at all the Audi R8s Tony Stark has driven through the years... along with a car we wish he'd driven as well.
Audi R8 Coupe, Iron Man (2008)
An hour or so after being introduced to Tony Stark, we're also introduced to his ride, an Audi R8. Sleek, angular and silver, it looked like a proper Italian sports car. Except it wasn't — the R8 is German. Today, it's almost a given that any Audi, like any MCU movie, will be good. But in 2008, that wasn't a certainty. My, what a difference a decade makes.
Audi R8 Spyder, Iron Man 2 (2010)
Mid-engined sports cars like the Audi R8 are not known to be practical. After all, they have room for just two passengers and in the case of convertibles, a sudden downpour can literally dampen your mood. But, trust Iron Man to improvise. He put the Audi R8 Spyder's open-topped nature to good use, not for cruising boulevards, but when he needed to transport an extremely large, awkwardly sized scale model.
Audi R8 e-tron, Iron Man 3 (2013)
Everything about Tony Stark, from his Iron Man suit, to J.A.R.V.I.S, to his smart home is on the bleeding edge of tech, so it should stand to reason his cars are the same. This was exemplified best in Iron Man 3, when he drove a prototype of the all-electric Audi R8 e-tron. While outwardly similar to the regular R8, the R8 e-tron prototype he drove in the movie is significantly upgraded over regular R8s, with generous helpings of automotive exotica like carbon fibre and titanium.
Audi R8 V10 Plus, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
The second-generation Audi R8 was introduced in 2015. As you might expect, it made a cameo appearance in that year's Avengers movie. It was driven, as you might expect, by Tony Stark. Are you seeing a pattern emerging, yet? Anyway, unlike the previous R8 Tony Stark drove, you could, if you had $800,000 or so lying around, buy the new R8. But what you couldn't possibly get for love, money or asking really nicely is the movie car's self-driving capabilities. Boo.
Pagani Huayra, when?
Tony Stark is known to be brash, more than a little mad and borderline caricaturish. So, it's always baffled us that he's never taken a fancy to one of Horacio Pagani's creations like the Huayra, which fits the bill perfectly. Never mind the outlandish exterior, its interior looks like the wet dream of a retro sci-fi set designer. Oh, and they're also exceptionally rare — across all its myriad variants, no more than 300 Huayras will ever exist.
