Audi introduces a fun yet practical ride with its latest compact SUV
Here's how the motoring scene has traditionally been broken down, when it comes to car models for various overarching personality types: Luxury sedans for the high-flying businessman, normal sedans for the practical uncle in his 50s, SUVs for the growing yuppie family, and hatchbacks for university kids to zip around the island in.
In a bid to meet the needs of growing demands and expectations of discerning motorheads, we've seen a burgeoning market in compact SUVs (like the Mazda CX-3 and Toyota C-HR). Welcome to the 21st Century, where the SUV has decided to combine its gene pool with a cute hatchback. The Audi Q2 1.0 is just that hybrid — a luxury car large enough for families of four, with sleek fixtures any design enthusiast would shed a tear for. Best of all, it's priced at a point that might just convert a mass-market buyer.
Despite its tiny three-cylinder 1.0 litre engine, this baby SUV revs up quickly and lends good speed. Fitted with well-weighted controls and accurate steering, the Audi Q2 1.0 is a superbly easy car to drive, coupled with a standard suspension that manages to expertly smooth the edges off sharp bumps. The driver's seat position is sporty and low in relation to the steering wheel, while high door sills showcase good visibility. While it might be a tad tight for three people in the backseat, two adults or three car seats will have infinitely enough wiggle-room. Boot space wise, at 355 to 1050 litres, it's big enough to fit most baby strollers or a couple of luggage at once.
"The Audi Q2 is #untaggable. As our first-ever Q model in this segment, the Audi Q2 has brought many fans to the brand. The addition of the 1.0 TFSI variant will take this success further," says Jeff Mannering, managing director of Audi Singapore. "As you'd expect from an Audi, the new engine is powerful and efficient, perfectly taking advantage of the car's compact size and nimble handling. This is a super fun car to drive."
Indeed, practicality aside, the Audi Q2 1.0 is all about a lively ride. Boasting a variety of equipment packages and expressive colours for the car's interior trim and seat upholstery, there's plenty of room for creativity. There's also an exclusive LED lighting package, which includes illuminated trim elements in 10 different colours.
New year, new car? This looks like a good place to start.
The Audi Q2 is priced at $152,391 (as of December 2017). For more information, visit Audi Singapore.
