The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2019: Mirazur from France takes home No.1, Noma at No.2 and Odette Singapore climbs to No.18
First in Asia
Today's the day. In the bustling hub of glittering lightshows and oblivious tourists that is Marina Bay Sands, commenced The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2019. This isn't just the first time the awards is held on our homeground, but the first time ever in Asia. Within the glitzy walls of Sands Theatre, congregated the cream of the crop, celebrity chefs, starving food journos from all over the world and feverish nominees on the list. Undeniably, it's a big night for the culinary heroes, as well as Singapore. After all it is the “city of pleasures”, as Annabel Crabb, our host for the evening so salaciously put it.
This year's edition introduced new rules: A) Voters (who consisted of restaurant experts, chefs, food writers and well-travelled gourmands) were gender-balanced. B) Previous No.1 restaurants will no longer qualify for the ranking, instead they will be crowned Best of the Best in a separate category.
In the end, it was Mirazur from Menton, France that took home the number one spot. "This is the first time a French restaurant comes out top on the list of World's 50 Best, and it is also headed by a non-French chef. There are no border and limits when it comes to food. That is the message we believe in," exclaims Mauro Colagreco. Our very own Odette also took a leap on the list with a steely No.18, followed by Burnt Ends at No.53.
