Tiong Bahru Bakery Foothills in Fort Canning Park: A cabin-like cafe in the woods with exclusive menu items
In the woods
Fort Canning Park is often lauded for its history, heritage, and many legends and myths. In a nutshell, it's an iconic attraction shrouded with mystery and folklore, but not exactly the first place you think about when you're talking grub. But now, all that's about to change with Tiong Bahru Bakery's seventh outlet — Tiong Bahru Bakery Foothills. This move could in fact, shake things up in a good way.
The famed and well-loved local bakery has settled along the foothills of the historical location, in the site that once belonged to the former River Valley Swimming Complex — one of the first pools in 1959 that was opened in Singapore — and conveniently situated just minutes away from Fort Canning MRT Station.
In a fitting ode to the location, the cafe is surrounded by lush greenery and keeps to a swimming pool theme, which nods to the site's history and design that mirrors a lodge in the woods. The cosy space is completed with lifeguard stands, donut floats, and faux "pool rules" sign décors that complement the elements left behind by the former swimming complex. The café is divided into two seating areas, an indoor seating area spacious enough to seat 75 people comfortably and an open kitchen that gives diners a good view to admire the artisans at work. Of course, there's also outdoor seating for those who wish to be one with nature.
"The location's rich history and surrounding lush greenery struck a chord in me — it was clear as day that this place has potential and ticked all the boxes that made Tiong Bahru Bakery great in its previous neighbourhoods," said founder and chairman of Spa Esprit Group, Cynthia Chua. "We're excited to work with NParks on appropriate programming to enhance vibrancy in this historic location at Fort Canning Park. Just like the old River Valley Swimming Complex, we envision Tiong Bahru Bakery Foothills to be an ideal meeting ground that brings generations of families and friends together — this time round over French pastries and freshly brewed coffee."
When it comes to the menu, apart from the cult favourites, expect an exclusive spread with bakes like the Sourdough Croissant, served with a creamy and crunchy crémeux praline filling as well as Picnic Bundles for you to lounge on a nearby grassy lawn for a relaxing picnic. These bundles comprises a variety of bakes, salads, and beverages for you to choose from, complete with a TBB takeout dining set and a customised picnic bag. There are also specially concocted beverages such as a local favourite of ginger tea perfumed with nutmeg, Nutmeg Teh Halia, and the exotic Sourdough Kvass, a refreshing, sweet and sparkling beverage that is brewed with sourdough yeast.
In celebration of their grand opening, from the 22nd to the 25th of April 2012, Tiong Bahru Bakery is giving out 50 complimentary TBB goodie bags to its first 50 customers daily.
