Tiong Bahru Bakery opens its fourth outlet at Chip Bee Gardens

The more the merrier

What's that old-school candy store at Chip Bee Gardens? It's the new Tiong Bahru Bakery

The cosy neighbourhood of Chip Bee Gardens is a quieter, charming alternative to the adjacent Holland Village. Once home to her first project Strip, Cynthia Chua, chief executive officer & founder of Spa Esprit Group, makes a nostalgic return to the Holland district with everyone's favourite bakehouse. Yes, Tiong Bahru Bakery has hit the neighbourhood.

Inspired by Chip Bee Garden's rustic charm, Tiong Bahru Bakery’s fourth outlet breathes the air of an old-school local candy store, which is apparent even before your first foot in. A takeaway express lane — foreign to other outlets — greets passers-by with offerings of delightful beverages and the bakery’s signature croissant and sourdough staples to-go. Not in a hurry? Enjoy a bite or two at the outdoor al fresco counter and tables. Your kids will love a go at the almost-obsolete coin-operated kiddy rides.

Inside the bakery, your usual streamlined glass displays are replaced by dipped wooden drawers characteristic of candy stores of yesteryear, featuring your favourite classics such as kouign amanns and smoked salmon squid ink baguettes. The walls add a pop of colour and cheekiness, as a pictorial maxim of the famous three wise monkeys is flipped to celebrate the openness in this residential neighbourhood — to hear good things, to see the beauty in this environment, and to speak well of others.

Menu-wise, expect the same pastries and beverages you would get at other Tiong Bahru Bakery outlets. However, if you are craving a little something special, be sure to head down before end July — pastry chef Samy Loison has created the Merah Saga, a tangy berry tart full of raspberry confit on a sable breton crust to commemorate its fourth home at Jalan Merah Saga.  Tiong Bahru Bakery, Chip Bee Gardens

We're not sure how the residents feel about the new crowd around their neighbourhood. Our take? You win some, you lose some; they've now got some pretty kick-ass breakfast to wake up to.
