TBB Safari: Tiong Bahru Bakery unveils its fifth and wildest cafe outlet in Dempsey
Handmade crossiants aren't the only thing that the folks at Tiong Bahru Bakery have been keeping busy with. Turns out, they've been hatching a safari — well sort of —welcome to TBB Safari, the local bakery's fifth and wildest outlet at Dempsey.
It's 2018 and we're in Singapore. Of course a bakery shouldn't just be a bakery — at least that's what founder of Spa Esprit, Cynthia Chua thought. "A bakery should be about the neighbourhood, it should be about experiences," she adds.
This branch is all about celebrating the outdoors. Housed in a sturdy tent-like wooden edifice and furbished with vibrant colourful décor reminiscent of a safari, the concept was conceived after Chua's trip to Botswana in Africa. In the 46-seater space, you'll find rustic furniture collected from Chua's travels, not forgetting polychromatic Kilim carpets made in Iran and Afganhistan. Probably the closest thing you can get to being in a real-life safari in Singapore. But even during a thunderous downpour, diners will be kept sheltered and dry; along with the added "camper "effects of the sound of raindrops beating down on the roof. If the weather doesn't cooperate while you're there? There's a simulated thunder audio clip booming in the restrooms to kickstart your imagination.
The menu here takes on a slightly different, healthful approach. While the classic moreish viennoiseries are still available, diners at TBB Safari can sip on antioxidant, colourful lattes (with the likes of tumeric, beetroot and blue pea that are all freshly procured from Open Farm Community's back garden) and tuck into power breakast jars with Southeast Asian flavours of black sesame, pandan, tapioca pearls and and rojak flowers.
Instead of just being a gold mine for the 'Gram, TBB Safari is taking on a bigger role of exploration in nature as well as spearheading better and fruitful diet choices for the whole fam. To combat the incessant heat of Singapore, they've also roped in the reinforcements of special fans to keep the temperature within the space to a cool 25 degrees. We're down for glamping, everyday.
TBB Safari will officially open to the public tomorrow, 16 Nov.
