In the current climate of COVID-19, apart from social distancing and killing germs left, right, and center, boosting your immunity may seem like the next best thing to do. And if you're stuck with the bad end of the gene pool  health wise  this may be of growing concern for you. Fortunately, there are plenty of delectable food groups that have been proven to boost immunity. So instead of relying on supplement tablets, power up your body with these nutrient-based foods that could save you a trip to the doctor's office.

Garlic

Bad breath aside, garlic has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties  a triple threat indeed. Rich in antioxidants, it can assist those with cancer, heart disease and even Alzheimer's. It can also prevent less major illnesses like colds and flu. However, if you're planning on adding it to your meals, be sure that it's done with minimal cooking and consumed while it's still fresh in order to reap its benefits.

Chicken soup

Feeling under the weather at your grandma's house meant that chicken soup was on the cards for your next meal. Standing among many folk remedies, chicken soup contains anti-inflammatory properties, reducing congestion that comes from the common cold. On top of that, chicken protein on its own contains sources of cysteine  an amino acid  that is proven to clear mucus. And chicken gelatin contains hydrophilic colloids, which stimulate digestion. Weave in the health properties of garlic (as mentioned above) into the soup and voila you've got yourself an immune-friendly meal. Turns out, grandma was right after all.

Yoghurt

This delicious treat is known for being a pool of creamy goodness, but studies have shown it to be great for digestion. Rich in probiotics, yoghurt improves the body's immune response, reducing the length and severity of illnesses like the common cold. On top of that, it also facilitates detoxification and heightens immune functions. Comprising of plenty of nutrients such as Vitamin A, calcium, zinc and potassium, yoghurt provides more energy for the body, aiding in recovery.

Citrus

Did you know that citrus fruits are loaded up with the highest sources of Vitamin C? Being an antioxidant, Vitamin C fights off free radicals  a molecule  that damages the immune system. Additionally, Vitamin C fights off the generation of white blood cells deterring infections when need be. Hence, not only are citrus fruits flavourful and pleasing to the eye, they are also packed with loads of nutrients, including potassium and fiber. And most importantly, the immune-system-boosting Vitamin C has been shown to shorten the duration and severity of colds. So, whether you want to protect yourself from the coronavirus or just a regular flu, this food group is a great choice.

Broccoli

Similar to citrus, broccoli contains plenty of Vitamin C — as much as consuming a regular orange. Hence, this dynamic nutrient comprises of various vitamins and minerals that assist in running the immune system in full force. It also contains glutathione, the finest antioxidant for your body. Who knew eating little bright green trees could save you from contagion?

Tomato soup

A bowl of tomato soup can fetch you a high dose of antioxidants, protecting cells against damage from free radicals. Specifically tomatoes, have beta-carotene, Vitamin C, E, A, and Vitamin K. Essentially, all the necessary minerals and antioxidants to keep you healthy and fit. Did we mention that tomatoes are also packed with lycopene which is anti-aging? Boosting your immune system and prevention of wrinkles? Now that's a good package deal.
