Cupping Room Singapore: Hong Kong's famed specialty coffee arrives at Ngee Ann City
A piece of HK
Many would label our city's centre, Orchard Road as shopping fodder for the retail-starved, but who knew that in the span of a year, it would be a place where you can find a decent cuppa. Not to discredit the longstanding tenants like TCC and Starbucks, but there's now a line-up of specialty coffee names entering the big, glitzy landmark — away from obscure, non-descript spots in Singapore. At Design Orchard, you can find the lovely folk from Alchemist, and after Kyoto's %Arabica opened its second outpost in [email protected], Takashimaya S.C. now welcomes notable coffee joint, Cupping Room from Hong Kong. A name that would resonate well with those who know their coffee inside out in the bustling city of Hong Kong.
Amidst political tensions and well, no sign of leisure travel in sight for now, the opening couldn't have come at a better time. To leaven the good news, this is Cupping Room's first international appearance — a venture proposed by Takashimaya S.C. to Cupping Room Hong Kong. It's a partnership between Cupping Room and Andrea Tan and Rodman Chan, founders and owners of 37Waves, a coffee consulting company, both of whom have earned their stripes as past-champs in Singapore National Brewers Cup. Grounded on neutral accents, the shop stands as an architectural beaut to switch up the usual suspects of the archaic mall — one that might breathe life to the entire address. Dreamed up by Brewin Design, this Singapore rep will feature local brand partners and designs into the mix.
Bearing the same name, Cupping Room in Singapore strives to match the quality of what the concepts in Hong Kong have been upholding. "Consistency is something we take very seriously because to us, consistency is synonymous with quality. That being said, we are also focused on customer service and adaptability. Our global retail presence has many of our products reaching a multitude of customers that already stand by our quality," remarks Tan. With coffee as a base ingredient, the serving methods will be slightly tweaked to serve the final products to customers in Singapore better. Local suppliers will come into play with drinks that are centered around matcha, chocolate, and chai.
The star of the scene — the coffee will be roasted by Cupping Room Coffee Roasters Hong Kong, on the espresso front as well as various Single Origin and Competition Series filter coffees. But if we're going strictly by the books, don't compare Singapore's outpost to the regular Cupping Room stores in Hong Kong. If anything, this lavish space in Takashimaya S.C. mirrors the company's newest concept — Doubleshot Hong Kong. Apart from coffee, there's a cocktail menu to be rolled out in the next few months — tailored for day-drinking. For grub, light bites like the signature avo toast from Hong Kong's menu will be reprised for the Singaporean palate.
Only expect the queues, especially with the current seating capacity only capped at eight in line with safe distancing rules. Taka's about to be poppin'.
Cupping Room Singapore will officially open on 10 October.
