A shortlist of top eats and treats in town


It's no secret that Andaz Singapore has emerged as one of the most impressive hotel openings of last year. Apart from its avant-garde interior and millennial-friendly services, the 5-star hotel also has a sophisticated steakhouse nestled on the 38th floor. Named after the temperature of its Pira oven and grill (the star of the establishment), 665°F prides itself on serving halal-certified prime cuts and sustainable seafood. First impressions: An instant treat for sore eyes — the cosy space is complemented with a decor similar to that of a traditional Savile Row tailor shop, with the added bonus of our city's stunning skyline. Our first word of advice? Don't skip the appetisers. Order the Hokkaido scallop ceviche or the jumbo lump crab cakes, delectable dishes which reveal the restaurant's allegiance to fresh seafood. When it comes to their big ticket meat items, 665°F serves up a slew of salivating options. Think grain-fed hanger steak, sirloin, tenderloin, short rib, and if you're feeling especially ravenous, an ambitious 1.2kg slab of wagyu tomahawk. Meats here are aromatic, juicy and perfectly tender thanks to the special charcoal grilling technology from their Pira oven. We also recommend washing all that grime down with a bottle of Andaz's signature Pale Ale. — JS

COMO Cuisine

Dempsey Hill has definitely upped its cool factor in 2017 with the opening of COMO Dempsey, a hip enclave featuring The Dempsey Cookhouse & Bar, COMO Cuisine, Candlenut, Ippoh Tempura Bar by Ginza Ippoh, and shopping haven Dover Street Market Singapore. All clustered within a couple of blocks, it's not hard to see why the fashion crowd and stylish families alike flock here for hours on the weekend. If you're digging brunch fare, COMO Cuisine's new menu (available on weekends and public holidays) features a collection of signature favourites from COMO hotels across the world. Each dish is perfectly calibrated with a mix of fresh, seasonal ingredients that serve specific nutritional purposes — from boosting energy to balancing blood sugar levels. Call for the raw coconut porridge, topped with almond, cinnamon, pepitas, and seasonal fruits, or garden green — a winning dish of veggies with sunflower seeds, avocado, and ginger miso. For something more substantial, it's worth wandering off the healthy track with the crowd favourite Brunch Burger, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken served with warm corn cakes and maple syrup. La Ventana

Previously touted for its Spanish tapas bites, La Ventana now presents innovative modern European cuisine dreamed up with Spanish and Southeast Asian influences. Housed within a beautiful colonial building and surrounded by verdant greenery in Dempsey Hill, the space lets on a tranquil setting perfect for any fine dining experience. The menu? Not so predictable after all. Instead of opting for conventional modern European dishes, the spread here sparks a delicate mishmash of Asian and European ingredients. Try their scallop paired with cauliflower pandan puree, a well-balanced combination with just a hint of fragrance from the pandan leaves. Another standout? The monkfish, pan-seared and steeped in a delicious saffron foam. For a refreshing dessert, try their curry leaf ice-cream, masterfully paired with Szechuan strawberries and lemongrass tea jelly. Without a doubt, a risk that paid off in our books. If you'd rather play it safe, their banana ice-cream drizzled with cinnamon glaze and pecan nuts is sure to suffice. — JS
