Loco for tacos

Text: Corinne Cheah

There's something reassuring about sinking your teeth into a fat burrito or biting into a delicately crisp nacho dipped in a swathe of guac. Contrary to popular opinion, you don't actually need to travel all the way down to a taco truck by the boardwalk of Jersey Shore or venture to the streets of Mexico to get a decent fix of Mexican food. Our city has quite the stellar list — check out these hotspots that are on our radar.

Les45

High above the bustling CBD, Les45 sits comfortably on the 45th floor of the Singapore Land tower in Raffles Place — all while serving up traditional and modern Mexican fare. The interior of the cosy establishment is decked out in elements of vibrant colours. Dip your nachos in their fresh Guacamole En Molcajete — freshly prepared in front of you with the help of a traditional Mexican stone mortar and pestle. The scallop ceviche is another must-try with its refreshing thinly sliced scallops and end off your meal with the classic Churros. Dinner with a view? Yes please.  LES45

Vatos Urban Tacos

This Korean-Mex hybrid obliberates all preconceived notions with the magic of kimchi carnita fries and beer battered fish tacos. Housed in a dim brick-walled space, Vatos feels bustling 24/7 — with the open access of the kitchen in full swing. One of their special tacos also include fillings of galbi (marinated short ribs) and a tad bit of ssamjang (bean paste and red pepper mix). Almost similar to the typical beef and black bean combination commonly found in Mexican restaurants.

Papi's Tacos

Get front row seats as you watch your food come together at the open show kitchen by executive chef Mauricio Espinoza, also affectionately known as Papi. In true Mexican communal manner at Papi's Tacos, menu items have been scaled down to bite-sized items. The popular lunch sets feature a main dish (tacos, quesadillas or a salad bowl mix), toasty chips and Pico de Gallo (salsa). Lighter options that are great for sharing include Esquites, a grilled corn dish with smoked chipotle aioli and Mexican cheese. Their Tres Leches cake is given an alcoholic twist — lightly frosted with a pinch of tequila. Papi

Los Jefes Taqueria

Some might know Los Jefes Taqueria as "Belmonte Latin Foods", initially a Mexican ingredient grocer in Singapore that sold preservative-free flour tortillas, salsas and condiments made in Mexico. At the rebranded restaurant today, you can find hot food items such as the crowd-pleaser classic chicken big burrito that is bursting with moist, shredded chicken, caramelized onions and a spicy and creamy chipotle sauce. Another front-runner is The Pastor, which is essentially the traditional taco filled with tender slices of house blend marinated pork and served with pineapple. Los Jefes

Lucha Loco

Duxton Hill is anything but short of amazing food establishments — covering all kinds of cuisines that range from Asian to Italian. The Mexican representative, Lucha Loco is both a taqueria (restaurant specializing in tacos and other Mexican dishes) and a bar that is adorned with stone walls and knick-knacks from flea markets. Not just confined to indoor seating, the alfresco garden is decorated with lights and candles — ideal for bigger groups or a romantic date night out. Their signatures include the Elotes (grilled corn) and their selection of tacos. For those craving for something moreish, try their Taco de Chorizo con Res (chorizo and braised beef brisket) while seafood lovers can go for their Taco de Pescado (a snapper taco with red onion salsa and chipotle mayo). Sounds like a fab weekend hang to us. Lucha Loco
