Ao Yun’s 2014 Vintage takes Chinese winemaking to new heights

Here's a little trivia to spice up your morning. Did you know that China has more space dedicated to vineyards than France, and that they're one of the world's largest wine producers? According to the International Wine & Spirit Research, China is on track to becoming the second biggest consumer of wine in the world by 2020, drinking 6.1 billion litres, only lagging behind the USA. So, it comes as no surprise that Moët Hennessy has chosen to venture to the foothills of the Himalayas as one of their winemaking regions, in the UNESCO World Heritage area between the Yangtze, Mekong, and Salween rivers. This is where Ao Yun's luxury wines are made — with a climate similar to Bordeaux, it boasts the perfect winemaking conditions of low night temperatures, strong sunlight, and mild winters.

The most recent offering from Ao Yun to enter the Singapore market is Ao Yun 2014 Vintage, an elegant blend of 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 percent Cabernet Franc. The wine is said to demonstrate more complexity than its 2013 predecessor — intense and deep dark in colour, featuring hints of cinnamon coupled with the freshness of mint and earthy tones. Take a sip and you'll note a dry, medium to full-bodied offering that showcases a mix of refreshing, fruity, and mineral notes. Forget French or Italian food; with this beautiful Chinese wine, we recommend pairing it with hearty Asian dishes, such as braised beef short rib and bok choy, as well as roasted pigeon.

Led by estate manager and winemaker Maxence Dulou, previously of Chateau Cheval Blanc, Ao Yun's winemaking process draws on the knowledge of 300 local farmers who are familiar with the terrain. "Ao Yun 2014 is the second vintage of this unique adventure and shows more complexity than 2013, due to better climate conditions during the growing season and vineyard management optimisation," says Dulou. Now, it definitely comes with a hefty price tag — so bring on the celebratory occasion and the large Chinese banquet.
