A&W returns to Singapore this year, so could these defunct F&B outlets make a comeback?
Never say never
In case you missed it, fast food chain A&W has announced that they will be making a return to our shores later this year. Yes, get ready for the reappearance of their waffles, curly fries and iconic root beer floats. To be located at Jewel, Changi Airport's upcoming new mall, preparation for the comeback seems to be in full swing. This return also sparks the nostalgia of having a piece of our childhood resurfacing. As we patiently wait for the space to materialise, we bring together five other F&B outlets that we wish would come back (poll at the end of the article). We're rooting for you, Best Fries Forever.
Are you really a 90s kid if you haven't heard of Orange Julius? Famed for their hot dogs and orange smoothies (a creamier rendition of your typical orange juice), the signature stand used to exist in amusement parks and shopping malls. While they've exited our shores, fans of the brand can take comfort that your favourite smoothies are still available in America — and thriving.
Synonymously associated with the iconic blizzard, Dairy Queen became famous for serving their ice cream upside-down to its customers. With the slogan "fan food not fast food", the ice cream chain had indeed gained quite a fan base for their special "blizzard of the month" promotion. Unfortunately, they exited Singapore due to rising costs but you can still find outlets throughout the rest of Asia such as Thailand and China.
Before brands such as Llao Llao and Yolé entered Singapore, there was Frolick. The OG frozen yogurt place relieved us of the summer heat with its cool and frosty offerings, piled on with a slew of toppings that stretch from fresh fruits and nuts to crunchy cereal. It also had an odd reputation of hiring pretty teenage girls to be on the service front. Perhaps if it ever came back, the brand should steer clear of that MO and branch out to be more inclusive instead.
Best Fries Forever
Our real BFFs then; they were our go-to snack bar at Cineleisure that served freshly made fries with a choice of six dips — their most popular being Wow Wow West (chilli beef and cheese) and Macho Cheese. Queues formed as people waited for freshly fried french fries doused generously in a sauce of their choice. Another F&B outlet that fell victim to rising costs, Best Fries Forever ceased all operations in 2015 — taking away with them a small part of our childhood.
Acronym for everything with fries, the homegrown fast-food chain was a favourite amongst many for serving almost everything on the menu with either shoestring or thick cut fries. You could also choose to top your accompnying fries with either bbq, salt and vinegar, garlic or curry seasonings, apart from being a pioneer of har jeong kai and pork char siew burgers. While the jury is still out on whether their burgers were as good as they seemed, one thing's for sure — we still miss their salt and vinegar fries till this very day.
Which F&B chain would you like to see make a comeback on our shores?
