Why settle for plastic when you can do so much better?

Sometimes, the world can seem like a scary place. But what is heartening to the current climate is the prevalence of reducing environmental waste in consumerism. This notion has been spreading rapidly, from major food chains like Starbucks and KFC Singapore to local cafes advocating the importance of sustainable consumption. Earlier this week, I was urged by a staff at Nylon Coffee Roasters to consume my coffee inside, instead of scurrying off in a disposable cup. Personal responsibilty immediately came to mind.

Which is probably what inspired this article. What's next after reusable takeaway coffee cups? Reusable straws, of course. After all, there's more damage to incur from the mass consumption of plastic suckers. Lucky for us, we live in a city that's pretty woke — there are definitely no lack of options. Here's where we're getting our hardy fix of metal and reusable straws.

Singapore's first sustainable grocery store don't just serve dry goods by the weight but also they also house a shelf dedicated to eco-friendly miscellaneous. Straws of metal, glass and even rubber are available here.

The Final Straw

This homegrown brand's mission boldly declares: "We will reduce or replace 100,000 plastic straws by December 2018". Stocked at F&B partners of namely Nylon Coffee Roasters, One Man Coffee and more, you can either choose between BPA-free stainless steel or organically made bamboo.

Crate and Barrel

Leave it to the good ol' Crate and Barrel to recognise the cause of sustainability. Slightly-bent stainless steel straws are now available in their physical stores as well as their e-commerce shop, which was launched recently.

This Singaporean site stocks a wide selection of glass, bamboo and stainless steel straws, from a good list of different brands. If you need options on length, width or degree of curvature, this online store has got you covered. While you're there, you could also pick up some reusable lunch bags and eco-friendly cutlery to kickstart that meal prep plan that you've been procrastinating.
