#ThrowbackThursday: Things we did before the Internet
There was a time when the Internet didn't exist. Yes, dear readers, some of us were born in the information stone age and lived to tell the tale
It's taken a bit of imagination on our part, but we're looking back to a simpler life without the Internet and, by its extension, smart phones, iPads, and all the other modern (in)conveniences that have come to rule our urban existence. Back then, phones had cords that on occasion plugged into the wall, and appointments had to be kept because there was no way to cancel at the last minute. What did we do with ourselves, you wonder? Plenty.
WE WENT OUTSIDE
"I used to stalk cats in parks... now I just do that online." - Denise Kok, Lifestyle Editor
Back then... Games did not always have the word 'video' preceding it and hide-and-seek was the perfect way to escape from the parentals.
WE VISITED THE LIBRARY TO LOOK UP STUFF
"Before there was Wikipedia there were reference books, encyclopedias and other tomes of wisdom that held all the knowledge that humankind had accumulated over thousands of years of existence. Now we just use google." - Renée Batchelor, Beauty Editor
Back then... Because information was not available at the click of a mouse, we were forced to develop 'research skills' and ingenuity. Overrated.
WE SHOPPED IN ACTUAL SHOPS
"Before wish-listing my favourites on MRPORTER.COM, I used to stash the last pair of size 30 jeans in the back of the store where no one could find it." - Norman Tan, Editor-in-Chief
Back then...Norman was a savvy shopaholic. Now, he is a savvy online shopaholic. But size 30. Who is he kidding?
WE PLAYED (BORED) BOARD GAMES
"Before word games on mobile phones and desktops, I used to engage in Scrabble wars with my mother. No amount of cyber-bullying can match up to the emotional blackmail that ensued between the two of us each time." - Adibah Isa, Culture Editor
Back then...We fought our battles face-to-face. Triple word score!
WEMADE OUR OWN ACCESSORIES
"I spent my free time making friendship bracelets and learning how to cross-stitch." - Dora Aljoofri, Fashion Editor
Back then... Our future fashion editor was already a true blue hippie. A true blue hippie grandma, that is. Rocking chair most likely included.
AND MOST SIGNIFICANTLY...
We didn't know every last exploit of every last Instagram semi-celebrity. And, in hindsight, we were better for it. (We're looking at you Kim Kardashian.)
