1KS by Park Bench Deli reinvents the working lunch
One for grown ups
While Keong Saik Road might have been notoriously known for its seedy beginnings back in the 1960s, it is now famously cited for being a food enclave full of old-world charm. Think an eclectic mix of ancient coffeeshops alongside trendy restaurants and cafes, who have one by one set up shop in the thriving neighbourhood. In a nutshell, it's a good place to be.
The new cool cat on the block? 1KS, a café by the good guys behind sandwich champs Park Bench Deli — which looks to reinvents the working lunch, by delivering hearty, flavourful fare to the working class in the area.
Housed under the co-working space, The Working Capitol, 1KS echoes the same synergy as their existing deli. There's hip Vans Off The Wall posters, exposed walls, and sumptuous grub. The idea is to keep things fun and casual — in the words of co-owner Aamir Ghani, one should "loosen their ties at the door". Anyone can casually drop in to have a work meeting or catch up with friends over lunch. First Tinder date meetup? This is the perfect spot.
What's distinctly different about 1KS is the grown-up menu, which is a far cry from the casual paper-wrapped offerings served at the deli. For starters, be spoilt for choice with their crunchy open-faced toasts. Try the Avo Toast, topped with a delicate soft-boiled egg, bright cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, and a light dusting of cayenne pepper. Craving for something lighter? Order their Chinese Chicken Salad, a refreshing creation tossed with a zingy peanut-ginger dressing, inspired by co-owner Andrei Soen's Asian-American roots. In case you were wondering, fans of their mouth-watering sandwiches can still look forward to chomping their hearts out with a brand new selection, exclusively available at 1KS. If you had to pick just one, the Short Rib "Swiss", a hoagie roll filled with tender short rib braised in wine for five hours, sauteed mushrooms, crispy bacon, and melted cheddar was a true winner in our books.
The menu also features a long list of beverages, so whether it's coffee, juices, or a smoothie packed with goodness, there's certain to be something just for you. Now, how can we sneak in that extended lunch break?
