National Day 2020 events and promotions in Singapore: Run 55km, stream local films and series on Netliix, sip on cocktails, and more
This is (staying) home
This year, 9 August wouldn't quite be the same as with previous years. As much as our nation knows how to throw a raving party when it comes to celebrating National Day, the annual parade will not take place like before — with the current situation of circuit breaker phase 2. Well, let's look at it as a newfound opportunity to shake things up.
While we probably won't be able to gather at the Marina Bay area dressed in red and white, enjoying magnificent aerial displays and singing along to national day songs, here's some patriotic alternatives that you can celebrate our city's independence with friends and family. If you're just looking to spend a night in with your closest confidantes, or even feeling like clocking in some kilometres on a virtual run, we've got the whole list of things to do this National Day weekend.
Host a cosy night in
There's no better place than home. Deliveroo has announced a series of local delights — spanning from Boon Tong Kee chicken rice to Ng Ah Sio bak kut teh, that you can easily order in. And if you're tired of exhausting your fingers on the Nintendo Switch, Netflix has announced that they will be rolling out a whopping 106 local films over the next couple of months, in the spirit of celebrating our local talent and film artistry. Indulge in some old-time classics from Phua Chu Kang, Ah Boys To Men to award-winning films like Ilo Ilo and Homerun with your family this weekend.
Cocktails to celebrate
Named one of the top 50 bars in Asia, MO Bar at the Mandarin Oriental is rolling out a special National Day package on 9 August from 6 to 9 PM including two signature cocktails (U.P. S$22-24 per cocktail) from their Volume II menu and a curated seafood dish at $48++ per pax. Show your local pride with the Lantern, a unique take on Singapore's iconic Chicken Rice dish created in collaboration with Vijay Mudaliar of Native. Made with chilli-infused Paper Lantern Gin, cucumber, ginger, citrus, and chicken broth, the spicy drink is served in an exquisite illuminated Peranakan designed glassware. Perfect for celebrating Singapore's cultural diversity.
Watch the mobile column display from your neighbourhood
This year's scaled-down mobile column will include the heartlands, covering a distance of 200km compared to 133km in the previous year. Expect to see 22 different types of military equipment with 66 assets from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on display. With a longer route being covered, this military drive-past will be a lot more accessible for those of us wanting to see the different types of military equipment.
Take part in the 55K National Day Virtual Run
If you've ever needed a reason to motivate yourself to go for a run, this is it. Join in on the 55K National Day Virtual Run/Walk, where all you need to do is clock 55km of running or walking distance by 31st August to receive your very own mobile armband, face mask and finisher medal. Admission is $10 per person, and you can sign up here.
National Gallery Facade Light Up and more
In commemoration of Singapore's 55th year of independence, National Gallery Singapore is launching a series of online and on-site activities for the public. During this challenging year, they plan to support Singaporeans and celebrate compassion and kindness amidst adversity, via the good name of art. Some events include the Gallery Light-up, where the edifice's façade will be illuminated in the national colours of red and white as a show of solidarity and unity, as well as live programmes like online art therapy classes that are all available on their website.
