Anxiety-reducing hacks on TikTok: Holding ice, putting salt on your tongue, and more

Ever since the pandemic, it's safe to say that everyone's anxiety and stress levels have been steadily on the rise. And everyone has their own process — some who can afford the time and money would head to therapy or a visit to The Fragment Room, while others find solace in sweating it out in a workout.

But increasingly, there have been more ways than one to relieve stress. And they've all been circulating in a endless algorithm that we now know as TikTok. We know you're probably perplexed at how the video-sharing app could possibly help with reducing anxiety but it turns out TikTok doesn't just boast cringey dance covers and entertaining memes. Instead, there are actually many stress-reducing hacks out there that could potentially help soothe your stress and take the edge off. We round up a few below.

Holding ice in your hands

This hack helps to calm your anxiety by acting as a distraction, as it will divert your attention away from the cause of your stress onto the coldness and numbness of your fingers instead. However, rather than just holding the ice still, which might cause pain in your fingers or it to get stuck to the skin, try and pass the ice between your hands.

The butterfly hug

If you're one of the many entranced by Netflix's K-drama It's Okay to Not be Okay, you would already know this hack — termed as the butterfly hug and used to calm people down. Just interlock your hands and put them on your chest, the sides of your shoulders, or your thighs. Then, tap your fingers one side at a time so it would feel like somebody is hugging you whenever you're in need of reassurance and comfort.

 

Putting salt on your tongue

Putting some salt on your tongue will make you so thirsty that you can only focus on the taste of the saltiness on your tongue. Of course, it's another distraction tactic from the anxiety and propel you to drink water instead. Of course, don't do this too often as too much salt is never a good thing. Make sure to only use a smidge of salt each time.

Using bath crayons

If you find yourself overthinking while in the shower, perhaps it's time to buy some bath crayons instead. By decorating the walls with your (erasable) doodles, it will help take your mind off worrying as you will be preoccupied with drawing instead. Furthermore, studies have shown that both colouring and taking regular baths helps reduce anxiety so you'll be killing two birds with one stone here.

 

The Sparkling water hack

All you have to do is take a glass of sparkling water and force yourself to concentrate on the bubbles. Look at them, listen to them sizzle, and feel the condensation. As you distract yourself by focusing on the bubbles, your worries will dissisipate just like them.

Get on the ground

Maybe the key to being free of your worries is to stay grounded. And no, we mean on the ground. We all know yoga to be therapeutic, but we might not have the time to go through an entire yoga workout. In that case, just dropping into a quick malasana (a deep squat pose from yoga) for 30 seconds can help you feel more calm and relaxed instantly.
