This is a tough topic, but one I ve wanted to tackle for a while. There s a saying, The worst preparation for life is a happy childhood , and this has made me reflect on what we are really doing when we constantly shelter and protect them. Helicopter parenting has never built resilience in children. How will they ever be strong and independent, if we always fight their battles for them? Life will not be fair, the world will not be kind, cut Tyler any slack, or give him special treatment. Tyler will have to learn how to deal with failure, unkindness, rejection, and injustice, all on his own. This is life, truly. .
When we hover watchfully in a playground, help do their homework, pack their schoolbags, bring their books to schools when they forget, complain to teachers constantly, we are not doing them any favours. I m not saying we should be harsh, unkind, or ignore them when they are in situations that do require intervention. But our emphasis should be on comforting while teaching, rather than shielding or protecting. This parenting journey is fraught with complexity. We continue to put one foot before the other arriving at each milestone, and hope that we are doing what s best. If we raise children that have never fallen or been bruised, we are growing the next generation of strawberries; young people who quit easily, have no tenacity or self-ambition and lack resilience. It s time to step back and let them grow their own outer shell. I also want to ask parents to be kind to ourselves. I know we want to be extra because we want to give them the most help possible, but I also want us to consider that sometimes what s best for them is less. Less competitive parenting, less pressure, less expectation. More support, more encouragement, more kindness. More faith that in a changing world, they will discover new paths all their own. Let them know you love them, no matter what, and will support and be there for them. Now exhale... #lovemom #thekidsarealright #sgmoms #sgkids
