Did you know that horse stables used to occupy the land where the hotel s Bras Basah Wing is? Back in the day, horse carriages were one of the main modes of transportation in Singapore. Horses housed within these stables were commonly used to transport guests of Raffles. In 1904, the owners moved the horse stables up to Orchard Road and the Sarkies Brothers built the new, street-fronting building in its place, called Bras Basah Wing.

During the hotel's first restoration in 1989 during excavation works, a horseshoe was uncovered and even the skeleton of a full grown horse!

Do you remember our iconic stained glass cast-iron portico? It served as the alfresco area to the Long Bar from 1914 to 1920 before it was replaced by the ballroom structure in the 1920s. Today, it remains an integral part of our façade, resuming its rightful place in the main driveway.
