Do you know how Cad s Alley got its name? In the past, young British men would sit under the cast-iron portico at the main entrance of the hotel, imbibing drinks of gin or whisky water. The spot was not only perfect for an afternoon tipple but was also a vantage point for the gentlemen to watch as the young ladies strolled into the hotel. In 1919, Cad s Alley was removed to make way for the building of the Raffles Ballroom. Since then, the alley beside the staircase leading up to the Long Bar has been named the Cad s Alley, in honour of its golden days by the main entrance. Here is a throwback photo of Cad s Alley before 1919.
