When it comes to sexual violence, one sometimes wonders if justice would be more easily gotten if the perpetrator broke their bones instead of breaking their spirit. .
.
Because we seem to understand broken bones much better.
.
.
What are the targets of sexual violence to do with the bodies they have to carry around for the rest of their lives? .
.
Peel off their skin, wash it, and wear it again? Scrub out their insides to remove traces of people they didn t want there? Go back in time and shout louder when they obviously weren t being respected or heard in the first place? How many times do you shower in a day? Have you ever had to worry about someone being there, watching you, filming you? What if he had sent that to someone else and that someone sent it to someone? .
.
And on top of that, when you go to people who SHOULD KNOW BETTER, they tell you it is your fault, they don t believe you, they tell you to let it go...?
.
.
Surely we are asking for too much? .
.

We REALLY have to think about why we are more concerned about perpetrators futures than justice, more concerned about their futures than the futures of people who have been sexually assaulted. .
.

This is a Monday post because I admire @monicabaey for standing up for herself, i admire all the survivors of sexual violence who REFUSE to let their spirits be broken, and i admire all those who keep speaking of it and pushing for change. And I admire those who stand by them. Some shitty stuff, but also stuff to be hopeful about.
