I am incredibly passionate about shaking up the education system and have served on the board of one of the greenest schools on earth for 5 years, and am currently an advisor for a global foundation focusing on wellness in education and my own my relationship with education hasn t always been so straight forward.

My mum was a teacher in Australia and I grew up with our home often filled with her students. The students adored my mum and would often turn up with food and hang out all weekend. There was even a time when her class of Bahasa Indonesia students raised enough money for themselves AND bought a plane ticket for my mum and they set off for a few weeks in Indonesia to immerse themselves in the culture and language of my father's land. I guess these memories set the benchmark for me of what a relationship with a teacher should look like. They never really were though.

My own school years were few. I left school and started traveling and working when I was 12 years old. Even though I have always had a passion for learning and an open and curious mind, the education system just wasn't for me. I simply didn't learn that way, I was not interested to learn what was being taught and didn't feel it would have any use in my life. I was also always the odd one out growing up in rural Australia I was often bullied because of the way that I looked. Racism was just part of my Everyday.
Would I suggest leaving school so early as a path for my kids? No. But I have instead tried to find avenues in which they can be educated in a way that broadens their world view, allows them to feel nourished and supported, keeps their self esteem healthy and they can grow up being kind, impactful humans. I can personally vouch for the fact that there is @lifebeyondgrades and I urge parents, educators, and students to release the pressure and relax a little because we need to have creative, resilient, compassionate leaders for this complicated world we are living in. Adulthood is already challenging, Let Kids Be Kids.
