Fashion prides novelty. That’s why our world was set on frenzy when Alexander McQueen sent Armadillo boots down the spring/summer 2010 runway; when Givenchy danced with Bambi on a T-shirt seemingly everyone wore in 2014; and most recently, when Jacquemus dove into a fantasy world and gave practicality a middle finger with the mini Le Chiquito bag.

Trends come and go, we know this. But trends come and go that much quicker when their engines run solely on shock factor. Don't just take our word for it. Check out below, the overplayed trends that rode the hype train in the past year, then tell us if they deserve the boot or a whoop in 2020. But hey, either way, your wild buys have no business in the landfills — donate them to charity if you're not feeling them anymore, or find them a spot in storage, because fashion, like karma, goes around and comes around.

1. Denim panties

While bike shorts remain ubiquitous, denim/jeans panties (also known as janties) are pushing the rising hemline moment a little too far for comfort at this point. These babies sound good on paper, yet how is diaper butt, or worse, chafing, chic? Similar to Paris Hilton's "that's hot" quip, this one's played out.

2. Bags as necklaces

One of the "joys" of being alive is to feel pain. And if the shoulder and back aches you get from lugging your gym bags and work totes around the city aren't enough, why not wear your carrier as necklaces and enjoy the exhilaration of a neck strain? No? No.

3. Micro bags

Before Jacquemus released his itty-bitty designs, the micro bag existed as charms adorning human-size purses. And to think we get a slap on the wrist for romanticising the past. Sure, we love this trend for the 'gram, but it lives its best life on virtual platforms, not reality.

4. Bike shorts

If you thought the athleisure trend would peak with fancy leggings and sports bra sets, you thought wrong. Since Kim Kardashian popularised them cycling bottoms, celebrities and influencers have been elevating their fitspo #OOTDs from sweat to swag. It might be time to give them a rest and wear some proper pants y'all — 2020 deserves that much.

5. Slogan hair pins

If you’re really a “queen” or a “boss”, let your actions speak louder than your words. Be classy, take charge. Merely announcing it on sparkly pins, pretty as they are, isn’t going to convince anyone whose opinion matters.
