The Oakley effect: Move over micro, there's a new sunglass in town
Witness the spectacle
It's not quite the end of the year yet, but fashion's forerunners have already begun to reflect. Though we can't say for sure what's going on in their heads, there's little questioning what's on them — a new breed of sunglasses destined to knock the micro variety off the top shelf.
More practical than its minute post-Instagram cousin yet packing substantially more punch than your standard shapes reeking familiar funk, the Oakleys (or rather, silhouettes in synonym with Oakley's eyewear), are breaking out of their arena. For the longest time, every jock and their father have at least a couple pairs on rotation. Today, Oakleys are no longer shackled by athleticism. With the rise and rise of the style underdog, they're now a league of their own, having scored major points with the true elite team.
Their new high rank makes sense. Because as far as OTT-ness goes, these don't adhere to formula. Pushing beyond the boundaries of its frames, the mirrored lenses are cut to sharpen the cheekbones, and glazed, rivaling rainbows and galaxies. Doing us one better, their temples are often nebulized in neon. Scroll to image #4 for proof. When they curb their enthusiasm however, the glasses take a turn for the protective, as demonstrated on slides #2 and #14.
