The making of Song Hye-kyo's Dior couture wedding dress
The most-talked Asian celebrity wedding this year is also the one that most know little about. South Korean actors Song Hye-kyo and Song Joong-ki had opted to officiate their union out of the public eye, with reportedly just 300 guests privy to the celebration. But, that didn't stop grainy pictures of the couple from surfacing all over the Internet. The former was snapped decked in a simple, A-line gown which turned out to be anything but — rather, a custom creation born of Christian Dior's hallowed ateliers.
For the sartorially curious, here are five fast tidbits about Song's Dior couture gown:
1. IT TOOK INSPIRATION FROM DIOR'S FALL 2017 HAUTE COUTURE RUNWAY
Artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri keeps alive the maison founder's sentiments for the season's collection, that is to appeal to all types of women. To her, that meant travel, movement, and the abolishment of physical boundaries. This planted the seed for Song's ensemble, but an open dialogue with the actress herself was key in whipping up the gown that reflected her personal inclinations.
2. IT ECHOED CHIURI'S CHAPTER AT DIOR
An occassion like the Song wedding calls for big guns, and of course, none other than head of house. The designer's occasionally pared-back elegance at Dior is apparent in the garment that's simple in design, but crafted supremely — a hint at a level of technical intricacy yet hidden from our naked eyes.
3. IT WAS BORN AT ATELIER FLOU IN PARIS
Dedicated to "soft" garments such as flowy dresses, Song's ensemble was crafted at Dior's atelier flou at 30 Avenue Montaigne, executed by none other than...
4. DIOR'S UNPARALLED PETITE MAINS
Translating directly to 'little hands', it refers to the talented and dedicated artisans behind each of the house's couture creations — including the gown in question. It is said that a wedding dress by Dior couture takes up to 400 hours to complete.
5. IT IS CRAFTED FROM SILK MIKADO AND PEPPERED WITH LACE EMBROIDERY
Opting for a more substantial breed of the soft fabric, the mikado silk gives form to Song's dress that nips in at the waist — contrasted by a dramatic, heavy-set flare. Meticulously cut lace trims the neckline and bust, giving the gown a modest dose of detailing à la true Dior elegance.
