There's no other movie festival in the world quite like this one. With Hollywood's biggest stars walking the red carpet, we pick the best looks from the opening of the Cannes Film Festival

Every year for two weeks, Hollywood's finest descend on the Côte d'Azur for the world's most prestigious film festival — the Festival de Cannes. Now in its 68th year, this is where breakout stars, directors and producers have their moment, but it is the celebrities' sartorial choices that undoubtedly steal the limelight even before the awards have been presented.

With an Official Selection list that reads like roll call at Hollywood's Walk of Fame, there is definitely no lack of gorgeous leading ladies this year. Highlights include films such as the Todd Paynes-directed Carol starring Cate Blanchett; Justin Kurzel's version of Shakespeare's Macbeth starring Marion Cotillard; and Gus Van Sant's The Sea of Trees featuring Naomi Watts.

But back to the real stars of the night — the clothes! Right from the opening ceremony of the festival, we pick our favourite looks right off the red carpet.
