Max & Co. ushers in the fall season with a '70s bohemian indulgence

Song and dance

Text: Andrea Sim

A polished pastiche of blooms and poppy hues

She might be remembered for her soulful, bluesy tunes, but Janis Joplin's influence in the style domain hardly went unnoticed. The singer possessed an unapologetic affinity towards bold florals, textural velvets and striking shades — her brand of irreverence a glue, one that is still influential today. In fact, it might just be what the Max & Co. design team was inspired by; the brand's latest release akin to dipping into the singer's stash of best threads.

Echoing her free-spirit — and that of the '70s — the Italian label's fall collection forsakes autumnal tones for vivid hues applied to patchworked floral dresses, satin blouses and shimmery knitwear. This code of femininity lent a gamine edge with the introduction of utilitarian puffers and workwear jumpsuits. While it is plain to see that the boho lover will find plenty to adore, the collection also takes into consideration the modern woman's sensibilities by streamlining the decade's flowy, bell-like silhouettes to reflect a contemporary polish.
