ICYMI: The wildest VMA looks, Forever 21 is broke, and Billie Eillish has a run-in with Nylon
Fashion by the ‘gram
1. The VMAs red carpet was OTT.
Snakes, (literal) boy toys, spacesuit, and did we mention snakes? The VMAs red carpet was nothing short of spectacular with the likes of Lizzo, Ava Max, and Keke Palmer owning their killer looks. We rounded up the best extra looks for your viewing pleasure, above.
2. Kim Kardashian West renames her controversial 'Kimono' line.
Although Kim Kardashian West is no stranger to controversies, she's attempting to undo her most recent one. After she received backlash upon trademarking 'Kimono' for her upcoming line of undies, the businesswoman gave the idea a second thought, which resulted in its renaming to 'Skims', a clever wordplay on her name.
3. Michelle Obama's dress designer, Isabel Toledo, passes away.
Most known for dressing Michelle Obama at the 2009 inauguration ceremony of President Barack Obama, Isabel Toledo passed on on 28 August. Her works notably celebrated diversity and inclusivity — her legacy will live on in her fashion.
4. Rihanna's Savage X Fenty show will be televised.
Less than a month after Victoria's Secret cancels its iconic fashion show, Savage X Fenty sweeps in with a bold announcement: they will be telecasting theirs, happening on 10 September in Brooklyn during New York Fashion Week, on Amazon Video. The show will be available for streaming on 20 September.
5. Billie Eilish collaborates with Bershka.
Barely a month after news of her MCM partnership broke, Billie Eilish x Bershka materialised. True to her signature style, the drop is full of oversized pieces and scrawled prints.
... but Nylon lands in hot water with her.
The magazine not only published a photo of Billie Eilish without her consent as the cover of their latest issue, the picture is an AI imagination of the underaged singer, bald and (sort of) nude. Eilish took to Instagram to express her anger, but has since removed the post from view.
7. Huawei X Gentle Monster Collaborates on smart glasses.
Chinese tech giant Huawei and Korean hype beast Gentle Monster fuse style with technology in a line of optical glasses and sunglasses. Read more about it here.
8. Emma Stone is the new Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmations prequel.
As if we weren't already psyched enough about Ariel and Mulan, Disney confirms another live-action, Cruella, fronted by Emma Stone, via a teaser shot during the D23 expo. The movie — to hit theatres May 2021 — is undoubtedly going to be the most fah-shun Disney has ever been.
9. Meghan Markle is launching a capsule collection for charity.
In support of do-gooder Smart Works, Meghan Markle will be launching a capsule collection of workwear with the help of a few fashion labels, out later this year. Via the charity, a clothing item will be donated to a disadvantaged and/or unemployed woman re-entering the workforce with every apparel sold.
10. Forever 21 is filing for bankruptcy.
Rumour is, the fast-fashion retailer is filing for bankruptcy to restructure its debt. Will the once-popular chain be able to stay afloat long enough to adapt to zennials's shopping pulse? Only time will tell.
In case you missed it, catch up on last week.
