Everything you need to know about the Hermès Carré Club extravaganza in Singapore
Be there or be square
If there's one thing we know without a shadow of a doubt, it is that Hermès can show us one hell of a good time. Take its transformation of Paris' Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild into a playhouse earlier this year. The themed rooms and the activities they house — think stylish board games, interactive optical illusions, silly televised and mechanical games, a real casino, and an OTT version of musical chairs — left us in a daze for hours. The dress code: Overdressed. The reason: Why the heck not.
It is this same spirit of freedom, joy and blithe exploration from which Hermès intends on releasing the velvet ropes of Carré Club, a one-weekend-only wonderland, a rabbit hole of its only kind in Asia if you will, into the world of Hermès silk scarves. Unlike the gentlemen's clubs and private clubhouses this interactive exhibition is modelled after, Carré (French for square, and square being the shape of Hermès scarves, in case you were wondering) promises inclusivity in every sense of the word, from the all-are-welcome check-in at the reception to the flights of utopia beyond.
Here are the nine —̉ yes, nine! — concept rooms within the Hermès Carré Club you would be ridiculous to miss.
1. CARRÉ CLICK AND CHECK
Upon arrival, "members" aka people who have registered to visit Carré Club will be presented with a membership card called Carré Check then ushered into a photobooth where you can snap a shot of yourself pre-magical ride, enhance it with exclusive filters and stickers, and share it with the world.
2. CARRÉ STUDIO
Witness the Hermès Carré brought to live in real time by five groups of artisans, one of who will illustrate members' portraits in his signature quirky fashion, free to take home. The words to describe the work of the others (which will be demonstrated in various stations) such as "custom stamping", "series animation" and "illustrations" don't quite do the processes justice; true craftsmanship should be observed closely. Inspired are we? Wordsmiths are invited to name one of the 75,000 colours Hermès has been using for decades in the creations of their silk scarves. Singapore's very own artist-embroiderer Izziyana Suhaimi will also be putting his personal touch on Carré, albeit of a more delicate kind. Yay inclusivity!
3. CARRÉ CUT
If you've always wanted to try on square wigs, Hermès would like to make your dreams come true. Manicures available.
4. CARRÉ CAFÉ
Described as "not your average square meal", expect the Southeast Asian dishes exclusively created by Singaporean food stylist, photographer and barista CR Tan for Carré Club to be specific in dimensions — even of all sides, naturally. What you shouldn't expect is eating it in peace; cabaret-inspired entertainment such as literary readings and old school arcade games are on the menu.
5. CARRÉ STORIES
To better appreciate the art of the Hermès carré, pick up the headphones at the retro telephone booths to listen to recorded messages by important personalities of yore. We heard secrets and tales of fiction are in the narrative. Juicy.
Those better at vocalising rather than listening, your space to shine is the karaoke box, belting out tunes related to — what else — silk. Four people at a time, please.
7. CARRÉ DISCO
A chill lounge by day and a disco by night, the dance floor is always open. So long as you're not too square to groove.
8. CARRÉ PARK
Skaters, bring your gear and ego to show off your tricks on the stage. Ramp. We mean ramp.
9. CARRÉ MANIA
So much more than a gift shop, Hermès' fall/winter 2018 scarves will be available for purchase, along with the special edition Hermès Carré Club silk bandana.
The Hermès Carré Club is open from 19 to 21 October 2018, 11am to 8pm. Admission is free. For priority access, register to join the club here.
*Shuttle services run to and from Hermès Carré Club every 15 minutes from 11am to 8pm; hop on a Carré-van at Liat Towers taxi stand (next to Hermès at Liat Towers) or Plaza Singapura taxi stand. For drop-offs, head to 3 Lady Hill Road. Parking facilities are not available.
