Dover Street Market Singapore: All the brands and Singapore product exclusives
A comprehensive list of brands, spaces, and exclusive products at DSMS — plus the Buro editors' top picks
Where: 18 Dempsey Road, Singapore 249677 Store size: 12,325 square feet Opening hours: Monday through Sunday (including Public Holidays), 11am till 8pm
When news first broke in December 2015 that Singapore would be the fourth city in the world to have its own Dover Street Market — Rei Kawakubo's cult multi-label boutique — the fashion front was abuzz with a cocktail of sentiments. Would the visual merchandising be as elaborate as the ones in London, New York and Tokyo? What brands will Singapore be retailing? Can we now cop the most coveted sneakers on home ground instead of battling for them with Internet bots?
Now that it's finally here, the anticipation, curiosity and doubts have finally been put to bed; Dover Street Market Singapore's (DSMS) 12,325 square feet space at Dempsey Hill is curated and modelled after the tactile experience its sister stores are renowned for.
"I think DSMS adds some much needed vibrancy to the retail scene in Singapore," says Tracy Phillips, our contributing editor and all-round fashion lover. "Its merchandise is more diverse in both design and price — a right move for the industry's current climate. Also, the store's high ceilings and sprawling single level space sets our outlet apart from the other DSMs."
At DSMS, it's easy to lose oneself in a brand's story: Balenciaga is tucked in a fuss-free nook displaying their subversive yet utility-focused fall/winter wares; Gucci is presented in a vintage-inflected, wallpapered, and carpeted corner for its explosion of eccentricism; Céline has a pared-back nine-month pop-up reflective of the brand's immaculate sensibilities; and Undercover is displayed under a neon sign reflective of the brand's gritty rep.
For the hypebeast and sneakerhead, you'll be happy to hear that DSMS includes Southeast Asia's first ever NikeLab retail space — one commanding a wall complete with the Zoom Fly SP and a CLOT co-designed Vapormax amongst other models. The DSM Good Design Shop (purveying Comme des Garçons products fashioned from repurposed clothing) famed for its CDG logo outers, ripe for the picking and fodder for the 'gram, lines the back wall of the floor space.
"This is a big deal for Singapore," says Norman Tan, editor-in-chief of Buro 24/7 Singapore. "We're only the fourth city in the world to have a Dover Street Market after Tokyo, New York and London. Like the other DSMs I've visited, I love the on-the-money curation of the latest and greatest luxury and cult brands. I recommend picking up one of the colourful football scarves from the Good Design Shop and an exclusive PEACEMINUSONE x DSMS T-shirt. Excited about what's to come."
And, of course, DSM's famed T-shirt space does live up to its cult rep in Singapore, replete with wares from the likes of Bianca Chandon, Gosha Rubchinskiy, Dreamland Syndicate and Cherry Discotheque (yes, our local club) — positioned near the entrance of the store for the fleeting shopper's quick fix. Also, functioning as a prelude to the ready-to-wear sections that boast a mix of veteran designers and under-the-rader labels such as Shushu / Tong, Molly Goddard and Melitta Baumeister, exclusive DSMS products are peppered along the way; ultimately a testament to the power of Kawakubo in fashion, and the designer's keen eye that is the bedrock of all DSMs.
"There's only one thing you need to do when you walk into DSMS: Look for a sales assistant, ask them where the Singapore exclusives are stocked, and buy them by the buckets; the Jacquemus and the Noir Kei Ninomiya can wait," advises Jolene Khor, Buro's associate fashion editor. "Make like the Buro 24/7 Singapore team and sweep up the Cherry Discotheque T-shirts (which I've been told are almost sold out) and the neon nylon tote bags with the DSMS logo splashed on the front, like there's no tomorrow."
Below, a non-exhaustive list of the brands stocked at DSMS, and the spaces and exclusive products any self-respecting shopper should look forward to discovering.
